Below is a compiled list of answers to some of the most commonly asked questions in the forum regarding the DonkeyKong64 game.


HOW DO I BEAT THE MECHANICAL
FISH IN GLOOMY GALLEON?


You have to hit each target 3 times. When a target is hit it turns yellow, then white, then it appears as a hole shot through the target. First off, kill the bee using the music. Next, jump on the platform on the left. Using your homing gun shoot the top target. The blade will now rotate. When it stops the bottom target will be open. Start shooting at it before the blade stops. Now, go back to the top target again... Keep going back and forth from top to bottom after each stopping of the fan blade. Barring no misses, and using quick hits on the target, you should be able to make it in time. Keep shooting at the last target even if time has expired, you may still get credit and the banana. Go in with plenty of ammo and don't be afraid to use it!


HOW DOES CHUNKY BEAT
DOGADON II IN FUNGI FOREST?


Start by avoiding the fireballs he throws at you. When he stops and pauses pick up the TNT barrel and throw it at him. After you hit him with the TNT barrel a hunky Chunky barrel appears. Jump in it. As soon as you become Hunky Chunky, start immediately throwing as many regular punches as you can get in. You don't have to move closer to him. You can hit him from where you got out of the barrel. Also, the important key is to not miss when throwing the barrels at him. When he's close to being beaten, Chunky will automatically throw one last primate punch at the very end to finish him off. Another thing, you can avoid the big fireblast shockwave by hanging over the ledge. Don't hang over the corner though or you'll die. For me, I had plenty of life left on my watermelons, so I found it easier to just take the hit from the shockwave and
then quickly pick up a barrel, throw it at him and get a crucial hit in.



HOW DO I BEAT THE CREEPY CASTLE BOSS: KING KROOL CUTOUT?

First you will have to knock his arms off, one at a time. He will pop up giving you time to jump in the cannon directly in front of him and hit him. Be careful, there is also a fake one that pops up too. You can easily tell the difference because the real one is bright colored and the fake one is dull looking. One other thing, the fake one is always directly across from the real one. You have to do this twice, once for each arm. (Swim back to the main platform after you hit him). The next part gets tricky. The fake KROOL will be gone for this part. After King Kutout shoots two rounds of laser beams at you, he pops up 6 different times going around the castle while making a "ahhhhh" sound on each popup. Run around the outside of the platform and try to find out where he's positioned when he's shooting the second set of lasers at you. Once you know where he is, run to the barrel directly across from him (popup 2). Then listen for the first ahhhhhh sound, IMMEDIATELY shoot into cannon at the start of the 2nd ahhhhh. Another way is to do it is stand by a cannon and look to the right. When you see the cutout pop up to the right of you get ready to jump in the cannon on the next ahhhhhh sound. Timing is crucial.


HOW DO I GET THE 8TH KEY
IN HIDEOUT HELM?


You need at least 4 battle crowns to enter K Rool's room. You need both the Nintendo and Rareware coins to open the door to get the key. Nintendo coin is in Frantic Factory and is won by beating DK81Arcade game twice. Rareware coin is won by beating Cranky's Jetpack game with 5000 points or more.


IN FUNGI FOREST, WHERE IS THE BEAN AND ONCE I HAVE IT WHAT DO I DO WITH IT?

You get the bean by using bananaport 4 (it's inside the mountain that's across from the tree where Diddy flies thru the owl rings). Tiny has to be small to go inside the mountain. Use the Tiny barrel behind the mountain. Jump on the stump in front of mountain and play the music. Squawks will fly Tiny to top of mountain. Drop down inside, kill the gators using the music, get the bean. You automatically pick it up as you walk by it. Take Tiny back to that spot where it talks about the soft soil (near Funky's and the large tomato area). The seed will automatically plant itself and a big corn stalk plant grows. On top will be a banana. Tiny has to jump in the tiny barrel and stand in front of the corn stalk. Play the music on the pad and Squawks will fly her up to top for banana.


HOW DO I BEAT KROOL
IN THE FINAL BOXING MATCH?


This is a detailed description for every Kong, so only read the part for the Kong that you are having trouble with. Each Kong's match is highlighted so scroll down until you find what you are looking for.

The KROOL Boxing Match:

Each kong will have a go at KRool. Each time a kong steps into the ring, they must hit KROOL 4 different times to do their part in defeating him. Each round will consist of 3 minutes. If you don't beat him within a 3 minute round, you'll go onto the next round using the same Kong you were using, but your life meter will stay the same. You'll have up to 12 rounds total to defeat KRool using all the Kongs.

Donkey vs Krool

At the start of the boxing match KRool will throw out shockwaves. Jump over the shockwaves or climb one of the corner posts until barrels appear in each corner. When this happens, climb the post if you haven't already using A button, then hit the UP on the controller. Holding UP will automatically put you inside the barrel. The first time you have to hit him, KRool will lift his arms up to gloat to the crowd. When he does this, press the A button and this will shoot you out of the cannon, right into KRool. The second time, repeat the first step. Now it's get a bit tricky. The third time KRool will try to fool you and slightly lift his arms. Don't shoot yet. Instead, watch your scope (the viewfinder moving up and down). When he lifts his arms up, start counting the DOWN movements on the scope. When it hits bottom on count number 5 shoot out of the cannon using A button. The 4th time is a repeat of the 3rd time, with a different count. Again, wait for the fake arm raise. When he lifts his arms slighty, begin counting the DOWN movements and count to 6. On the 6th count, wait till the scope hits bottom and shoot out using the A button.

Diddy vs Krool

Krool will throw a boxing glove in a circular motion at you 2 times. Avoid it by backflipping over it. After the 2nd time the glove returns to KRool, a jetpack barrel will appear in front of him. You need to jump into the barrel, then press A and the up position on the toggle to begin flying.(NOTE: This manuever is a tough feat since he starts throwing at glove at you while you are trying to hop into the barrel.) Wait for the glove to START returning to Krool, then head for the barrel. Once you are in the air, you will see a target on both sides of the overhead light. You need to fly over very CLOSE to the target and shoot it with your peanut shooter, then fly around to the back side of the light fixture and repeat the move. KRool will be throwing the glove up at you while you are doing this so watch for it. To avoid the glove, you can fly up when the glove comes towards you, then drop down again, line up even with the target and press the Z button to hover, while shooting peanuts at the target. The sequence is the same for taking out all four light fixtures (2 targets on each light). ONE IMPORTANT NOTE: After you take out the two targets and the bucket drops onto KRool's head, continue flying while waiting for the next sequence of targets to come up. You don't have to drop down and hop back into the barrel after you knock the targets out. An IMPORTANT HINT: If you can't find where the targets are while you are flying, just look at where KRool is positioned. He always stands directly under the targets that need to be hit for that round.

Lanky vs Krool

The idea is for Lanky to hit a switch, pick up the barrel and throw it. When he throws it to the ground it changes into a banana peel. You must get the banana peel between you and KROOl and then play the music, hoping KROOL will run towards you and slip on the banana.)
When you hit a switch the barrel comes up on a platform. If it looks like KROOL is coming at you, run around behind him, then continue on and pick up the barrel. I like throwing the barrel in the direction of the music pad. Directly in front of it. I then go towards the pad and hit the R button to see where KROOL is located. If he is between me and the banana I play the music. If not, I wait for him to pass between me and the banana, then play the music. Sometimes, he is coming around the arena right for me, if that's the case, I move off the pad, circle around behind him and back on the pad again, wait for him to get between us and play the music. He is slow so you can get around him. Also, sometimes by running around the banana disappears and you have to do the barrel again. After he slips on the banana, I immediately push the toggle to the right and start off running to the next switch before he is even up again. You don't have to do the switches in numerical order. Some people like to throw the banana in the center of the ring so they can pick which pad to run to, I prefer throwing it in front of the pad, but this is for you to practice with.

Tiny vs Krool

Avoid the shockwaves by either ponytail twirling over them or climbing up a corner post until a Tiny barrel appears in front of KRool. Jump into the barrel to become small. Go inside the shoe, stand in front of the second toe from left. Tiny's feather bow is already equipped so all you have to do is shoot. First time she hits the first toe when it sticks up in the air. She only shoots this toe once and then goes back out and jumps in the tiny barrel again....second time she hits the second toe when it sticks up in the air (the first one will be red from the last round of hits), but she must dodge the wiggling toes in the process. Each time she hits a toe the toes will wiggle before you get in that next shot on the toe, so dodge back and forth to avoid the toes. She will hit the second toe two different times during this round when it sticks up, then goes back out and jumps back into the tiny barrel. The third time she goes into the shoe she will shoot the third toe when it sticks in the air (the first and second ones will be red from previous hits), while dodging the wiggling toes. She will shoot the third toe three different times in this round, then she goes back out and jumps into the tiny barrel again. The forth time she goes into the shoe she will shoot the forth toe when it sticks in the air (the first, second, and third ones will be red from previous hits), while dodging the wiggling toes. She will shoot the forth toe four different times in this round. Once this is accomplished you will beat KROOL with Tiny.




Chunky vs Krool

First two times Krool will be invisible. You need to jump on the switch and then run to a pad and hit the Z button, then to the barrel in the middle of the ring. Avoid KROOL if you can. After getting in the barrel, Krool will run at you while you are standing in the corner. Wait till he gets between 1/4 and 1/2 of the way to you and then do the primate punch with Z and hit the B button. The third time repeat hitting the swich and going to the pad and barrel. Now KROOL will stay invisible, watch his shadow. (Immediately) As soon as it starts to move at you again do the Primate punch. The 4th time he will be invisible and zig zag back and forth towards you. As soon as his shadow is close to you and to the left hit him with a primate punch once more.




HOW DO I BEAT DK81?

The first time through you play for a banana. This is the basic scenario but there are slight variations to playing this game.

Level 1:

Try to get to the top as fast as you can by running, climbing ladders, and jumping barrels. The barrel pattern being thrown at you by DK is always the same (on the first go around) so watch it to get used to the pattern. You can make it to the third tier without ever jumping a barrel. If you hurry. Push the toggle in the up position as soon as you get close to the ladder. This helps you run up the ladder quicker. (for example, toggle the controller to the right and as soon as you get by the ladder hit up, almost doing it in a backwards L shape). On the second tier don't go for the hammer. Instead, go to the closest ladder to you and immediately climb it. On the third tier, run right towards the first ladder. I usually have to jump this barrel here (which is close to the ladder), then I backtrack and climb the ladder. 4th tier run right and jump the barrels, while trying to get close to the ladder, you may have to jump one barrel past the ladder and backtrack again, and up the ladder.

Level 2:

Go to the right and get the (telephone or whatever that thing is in the middle). Climb the ladder to the right of the phone, but stop before you get to the top. Wait for the pies to go by (they will move on a conveyor belt forward then back again). Climb up and keep an eye on the fireball. If it looks like it's coming at you run to the other side, and get the other telephone. Climb up the steps to the next conveyor belt. If need be, you can jump over the pies and fireballs but it's tricky because the conveyor belt is moving with you on it. You have to time the jumps carefully, depending on which direction the conveyor belt is moving. To get to the moving vertical ladder quicker, you can try pressing forward and jumping. You can climb on the moving ladder to avoid the pies. When the ladder fully extends make a break for the top level where DK is, but be careful, make sure DK isn't standing next to you or he'll get you. (NOTE: sometimes the second level pie and fireball pattern changes, so this scenario may be slightly different than what you see).

Level 3:

You are trying to work your way from left to right, then up to the top. The 3rd level is the hardest of all because of the bouncing springs. They always follow the same pattern though so watch their pattern and time your jumps accordingly. Immediately after the spring passes the platform you are on jump over to the next platform. Also, be careful to make very very small jumps on and off the elevators or you will fall and die. Jump when the elevator is even with the platform you are on. Be patient with the fireball on the far righthand side, he will eventually climb up the top of the ladder giving you time to jump across to the next platform (again, wait for the spring to pass, then jump to the next platform and quickly jump to the next platform....back to back quick jumps). To do this: wait for the fireball on the right hand side to go up the ladder. This can take some manuevering back and forth and up and down the platform Mario's is on (far right platform below fireball) to get the fireball to go up the ladder. Once the fireball goes up, wait for the spring to pass...time it so you RUN and jump immediately when the spring is going by you and the fire ball is going up steps or on top of that platform. When you run and jump....run, jump and jump again to the second platform while holding the toggle in the forward position. Once you reach the platform right below the top level, climb all the way up the ladder and wait at the top until the spring passes over you. Run and stand just to the right of the ladder with the Princess. Don't stand under it or you'll get hit. Wait for the spring again to pass over you and run up the steps. Do this very quickly so the spring doesn't hit you at the top of the step. (Note: It also helped me to turn the sound off while playing the third level. The spring noise was a distraction).

Level 4:

The object here is not to get to the top, but to break all the yellow girders away so the platform will cave in and fall. I found it easier to work my way to the top using only the right side. As you walk over a yellow girder it will fall leaving an open space. Once at the top, climb down the steps, jump across the open space (where the girder was) to the middle, and use the hammer to kill as many flames as possible. Then climb up to the top left side and work your way down that side, crossing the yellow girders as you go down the steps. Just watch the fireballs. If need be, jump across the girder and back again to avoid them.

The second time through you play for the Nintendo coin and it will cost you 2 coins to play (one time fee). You play the same 4 levels again but this time it's a bit tougher cause the patterns change slightly, everything seems faster, and there are more fireballs.



HOW DO I STOP THE ROCKS FROM
FALLING IN CRYSTAL CAVES?


Take Chunky up to where the castle is. There will be a boulder nearby. Carry it over across a bridge to a switch with a picture of a boulder on it. Set it down on the switch causing ice to explode around another boulder. Go over by Cranky's, go across the bridge and plank and you'll run into an transparent ice wall. Break the ice wall with a primate punch. Go into the tunnel and you'll see the boulder you released. Hop in the Hunky Chunky barrel and pick up the boulder. Set it on top of the rotating boulder switch. This makes the ice around the ice dome explode, giving you access to the banana and monkeyport. Go back to the big igloo area. Change to Tiny. Take the monkeyport to the top and play the music to kill the clubber.


HOW DO I GET INSIDE KROOL'S MOUTH?
IT'S OPEN BUT IT WON'T LET ME
USE DIDDY TO FLY IN THERE.


To get to the mouth use Tiny. Go to the bottom of the ship and walk up the path. You'll see a monkeyport pad. Use the pad to take you to the top of the ship. Once there, keep walking around the pathway. When you see the opened mouth, have Tiny ponytail twirl into it.


HOW DO I BEAT FRANTIC FACTORY
BOSS MAD JACK?


There are two ways for Tiny to avoid Mad Jack as he moves around the squares. Tiny can ponytail twirl from square to square, or she can stay on the elevator until he stops. Either way, check to see what color square Mad Jack landed on. Two switches will appear when he stops bouncing...one on blue and one on white. Ponytail twirl to the switch of the same color he is on and simiam slam it. For example, if he stops on white, go for the white switch. If it's blue he stops on, go for the blue switch. Also, be careful of the lasers he shoots at you. Avoid them by ponytail twirling to another square.

The last couple of times Jack becomes invisible so it gets really tough. You'll know where he is by watching the multicolored trail he leaves behind. When he becomes invisible, it's best to stay on only two squares....the one you are on and the one he is on. He will always follow you so you can be assured that he will land on the square you were just on. The first time he becomes invisible, watch for the multicolored trail start to take off, then ponytail onto his square. Now, the second ponytail twirl should start immediately going back to his square. In other words, take off as soon as you land..don't delay or Jack will get you. Keep doing this until he stops bouncing. When he stops, you'll know the color he is on just by looking what color you are on. Head for the opposite colored switch and simian slam it. You may have to jump back and forth 12-14 times (I am talking each individual jump). HINT: If you have trouble seeing where Mad Jack is, try changing your camera angle, using the top right R button while moving a little bit.
HINT: If the switch appears too far away, you can have Tiny jump off the side and start over.



HOW DO I GET DONKEY THROUGH
THE MAZE IN CRYSTAL CAVES?


There are two ways to do this. The easiest would be to play the bongo drums as soon as Donkey enters the room. Then proceed carefully through the maze while it is stopped. Make sure you don't take a step when you enter the room. Then play the music.
Another way would be to keep on running..even when you get hit. You are invincible for a few seconds after being hit...crucial seconds that can get you through the maze..so keep on running.
